USP Benefactors Society

A Tradition of Giving

Gifts through bequests, trusts and other arrangements have been an integral part of the advancement efforts at USP for well over 100 years. The first bequest, in 1865, provided for the important purchase of books and “scientific apparatus.” No less a luminary in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy’s history than Professor Joseph P. Remington exhorted his follow alumni in 1893 with the following words, “If immense sums can be annually applied through gifts, bequests, trusts, and in other ways for the support of large universities and colleges, which simply give a general education, will it be impossible to ask that a sum be set apart to aid in pharmaceutical education, whose importance to the general welfare is far greater, for through it flow the issue of health or disease, safety or disaster, life or death?”

In the more than 100 years since that exhortation, bequests and planned gifts have become an increasingly important source of the University’s quality growth. Such gifts made possible the construction of Whitecar Hall, McNeil Graduate Study and Research Center, The Joseph W. England Library and Rosenberger Auditorium. The University endowment and scholarship program benefited greatly from the will of Dr. Eli Lilly ’07. In recent years, many planned gifts by alumni and friends have endowed scholarships, benefited Griffith Hall renovations and supported library acquisitions.

Quality Through Planned Gifts

The Benefactors Society is meant both to honor those who have used planned gifts/bequests to contribute to USP and to encourage many other alumni and friends to consider this attractive form of giving. Some members of The Benefactors Society provide gifts as an expression of their gratitude for the superb education they received and which prepared them for a rewarding and productive life. Others are motivated to include USP in their financial and estate planning by the concern that the University maintain its preeminence in science, pharmacy and health science education. The size of the gift is not a factor of membership in The Benefactors Society. Indeed, the amount of the gift and the method of giving will be determined by your motivations for including USP in your estate plans, your personal circumstances after providing for your loved ones, your own financial objectives and other special interests.

Recognition

The Benefactors Society was established to recognize alumni and friends of the University who, in increasing numbers, are ensuring that USP will have the financial resources to continue its rich tradition of education excellence for generations to come. Members are providing substantial support for USP while, at the same time, providing for themselves significant personal benefits such as increased income and tax deduction. Members of The Benefactors Society have made a commitment to the long-range future of USP through wills and other planned gifts.
